About the workThe communist Friedrich Engels found pictures such as this “more effective for socialism than a hundred pamphlets”. Anxious weavers are shown waiting for the factory owner’s verdict on the cloth they have made. Through his gestures, the folds of the cloth and the dog, the factory owner is depicted like a ruler. The Düsseldorf artist Carl Wilhelm Hübner became known for his novel images of contemporary social ills. In this main work he devoted himself to the plight of the Silesian weavers, which culminated in an uprising shortly after the painting was completed.
