About the workIn a story from the Old Testament and the Torah, the young woman Rebekka symbolises helpfulness. An elderly man asks her for water at a well and she gives it to him and his camels. In return, she receives an offer of marriage and riches, as the man is looking for a wife for his master Isaac, a patriarch of the people of Israel. The Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini depicted the scene, which was popular in his day, with his typical loose brushstrokes. Rebekka’s outstretched hand indicates that she accepts the offer.
