on display, room 020 About the workThe Cologne-based painter Karl Marx engaged intensely with the abysses of human nature in his works. He drew his motifs from photographs found in newspapers or magazines. He selected suitable excerpts and transferred them onto large-format canvases. They depict, among other things, acts of violence, injuries, and murder. Marx painted over his works multiple times until only fragments of the original motifs remained visible. According to him, this painting technique softens the brutality of what is shown. But does it make the cruelty more bearable – or even more powerful?
