About the workA pair of shepherds rest in an unspoilt, peaceful landscape, which is bathed in a warm light and appears dreamlike. The Dresden painter Ludwig Richter often depicted different seasons and times of day, which he associated with Christian ideas. For him, spring was a symbol of paradise, which needed to be regained. The young woman’s gaze and gesture add tension to the painting and make the viewer curious about what she is seeing or hearing at that moment.
