About the workThe Amsterdam painter Jan Jansz. Treck specialised in 'monochrome banquets'. Typical of this form of still life are laid tables in dark shades of grey, brown and green. Fine vessels, juicy grapes, crawfish and the wrinkled, bright white linen cloth suggest a finished or interrupted feast. The impression of randomness is intentional, but it is created by a carefully arranged composition. Everything is intended to testify to luxury and wealth: the decorated silver cup and the porcelain bowl from China in particular are truly precious.
