About the workThis painting is attributed to the Italian artist Cristoforo Munari. Using musical instruments, books and a so-called armillary sphere, a device for clarifying the position of celestial bodies, he presents the theme of the sciences and the arts. The broken strings and pages turning in the breeze allude to the transience of life and the arts. Munari often depicted luxury goods, which art historians trace back to his work for the de’ Medicis, a wealthy Florentine ruling family.
