It is surrounded by a row of tall trees whose silhouette resembles the curved coastline. Walter Ophey travelled to Italy in 1910 but only produced this painting of the coast of Positano after his return to Düsseldorf by basing it on a chalk drawing. He had studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and was a founding member of the exhibition group Sonderbund in 1909 and the artists’ association Das Junge Rheinland (The Young Rhineland) in 1919.
