on display, room 010.2 About the workAn elderly artist looks up from his easel as if disturbed by the viewer’s gaze. He is busy copying old masters in a painting gallery – as was common practice at the time – while a younger colleague works beside him. The gallery attendant points to the latter’s picture, but the visitor is only interested in the older man’s painting. This interaction between different perspectives and the lively hustle and bustle of museum spaces characterises several works by Ferdinand Brütt, who lived in Düsseldorf until 1898. The images displayed on the walls are almost incidental in these scenes.
