About the workMountains and sea views like this are not to be found by the Baltic Sea. However, the Dresden Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich was of the opinion that nature should not be reproduced realistically, but rather that its “soul” should be captured. He therefore combined various nature studies in his studio to form paintings. Here, water, land and a small temple meet roughly in the centre of the image. This is where the gaze is directed, which is then led from the earthly to the heavenly realm via the flagpole.
