About the workThree nymphs offer wine and fruit to the Roman god Bacchus. This is a reference to his role: Bacchus was worshipped as the god of wine and fertility. His foot rests on a mask with white hair, which can be interpreted as an allusion to the “ugly” face of wine, alcoholism, or to old age and death. The Dutch painter Caesar Boetius van Everdingen conveyed a feeling of sensuality through the depiction of a variety of materials, such as smooth marble, shiny metal and soft fur.
