About the workThe Dutch artist Jan Frans Douven was a court painter in Düsseldorf. In this study for a larger self-portrait, he depicts himself in front of a double portrait of his rulers, Elector Palatinate Johann Wilhelm and Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici. In this way he demonstrates his social rank. His gestures pay homage to the electoral couple, but at the same time he is confidently presented in noble clothing reminiscent of the monarch himself. Douven also worked for the court as an art agent and helped to establish the elector’s Gallery of Paintings.
