About the workChristian Köhler was one of the students who followed Wilhelm Schadow, the director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, from Berlin to the Rhineland, and was also a core member of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. This work is an example of the so-called “Seelenmalerei” (soul painting) that made the Düsseldorf artists internationally famous. They focused on the emotional life of the subject and ignored the literary background of their motifs – in this case the biblical narrative of the enslaved Egyptian Hagar, who was cast out to wander through the desert with her son Ishmael.
