About the workEduard Bendemann was known for his large-format paintings. This one was created during his time as director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. As a Christian of Jewish descent, Bendemann often took up stories from the Old Testament or the Torah. Here he chooses the story of the prophet Jeremiah, whom he places at the centre of the image. Jeremiah predicted the destruction of Jerusalem and was imprisoned for it. Bendemann shows the fulfilment of his prophesy through the Temple of Solomon in flames and the Jewish population being led away into captivity in Babylon.
