About the workThis painting is regarded as a key work by Jan van Scorel, as the landscape has an unusual significance for the time. The biblical tale of how the archangel Raphael accompanied and protected the young Tobias on his journey is only illustrated at the edge of the picture. Van Scorel, who came from the vicinity of Alkmaar, combined the typical Dutch perspective of viewing the landscape from above with colours such as ultramarine, which were more common in Italy. He was a well-travelled painter who visited Italy, Germany and what is now Israel.
