About the workThis painting shows a dying man in impoverished surroundings being interrogated by the police. The realistic depiction of social misery in a large format made the picture a talking point and established the success of Arthur Kampf, who painted it towards the end of his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He later moved to Berlin. For many decades he was arguably the most eminent German history painter. The artist joined the Nazi Party at an early stage and was one of only five painters that Adolf Hitler included on a special list of “irreplaceable artists”. After 1945, his oeuvre was largely forgotten.
