About the workAt first glance, the painter presents an ideal world: a sunlit half-timbered house, washerwomen by the river and children playing. But a thunderstorm is brewing, and the destroyed tree and leaking boat also have menacing undertones. Andreas Achenbach was famous for such dramatic landscapes. The mill, which he borrowed from Dutch painting, was a very frequent motif. This large-format work was acquired by an association in the same year it was completed; they wanted to include it in a prospective Düsseldorf museum that would not be founded until 1913.
