About the workWith the invention of ready-mixed colours in tubes in the middle of the 19th century, it was easier for artists to paint directly in nature and immediately capture the mood of the light. In particular, they created oil studies, which were not seen as works of art but served as the basis for paintings. In this piece, the painter was less interested in the motif than in the rendering of light and colour. Oswald Achenbach likely produced it on one of his eight trips to Italy. He taught landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art from 1863.
