About the work‘His art and his life were balanced and in harmony, hence the kindness that radiates from both.’ This is how the painter Max Liebermann remembered his teacher Carl Steffeck in 1913. Steffeck was a professor at academy of art in Berlin from 1859 and was widely known as the ‘painter of the horse’. Steffeck's predilection for depicting animals is also evident in this painting. Starting at the end of the 18th century, having pets was no longer exclusively reserved for the aristocracy. As can be seen here, dogs and parrots in particular were popular companions in the 19th century.
