About the workIn Norway, home of the artist Adolph Tidemand, the Haugean Christian movement campaigned for religious freedom. They believed that anyone who felt called to do so should be allowed to hold religious services. This picture was painted in Düsseldorf, where Tidemand had studied at the art academy and taught private lessons. Various fellow artists sat as models for the peasants. Tidemand achieved his artistic breakthrough in Düsseldorf with this work; the painting was acquired in the same year of its completion by an association that aimed to establish a museum in Düsseldorf with its collection.
