The painter Ludwig Knaus, who worked mainly in Düsseldorf until 1874, was one of the leading representatives in this field. Pictures of children were meant to be pleasing, natural and lively. This is why there is no critical examination of the poor living conditions in this image; they are intended to emphasise the idea of an original, innocent state, which the child also symbolises. Created in 1886, the work was acquired in the same year by the Association for the Establishment of a Picture Gallery in Düsseldorf.
