About the workGodfried Schalcken is said to have placed his models with a candle in a dark room and portrayed them by looking in through a hole from the outside. Whether this piece was also created in this way remains unclear. It is assumed that it was not painted by Schalcken, as he generally painted in finer brushstrokes. Scenes illuminated by candlelight were a popular motif in Dutch painting in the second half of the 17th century and a speciality of Schalcken. Artists demonstrated their skills with the technically demanding, strong contrasts of light.
