About the workThis motif of an Estonian beach in present-day Tallinn is typical of Gregor von Bochmann's painting as well as of the critically and academically recognised art of the 1880s: the choice of colours is based on 17th century Dutch painting, the focus is on composition and the use of light. Despite the many figures, it is less about a narrative than about the mood evoked by the gloomy weather. Bochmann grew up on an Estonian estate, studied painting in Düsseldorf and settled here permanently.
