About the work“If every individual would renounce the accumulation of possessions, then everyone would have enough,” wrote Saint Francis. Born at the end of the twelfth century, he was the founder of the Franciscans, the first mendicant order. To this day, the Catholic monastic community continues to take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The Franciscan order was very present in the everyday life of the Spanish Baroque painter Francisco de Zurbarán. When he moved to Seville, he even received a commission from them. Nevertheless, it remains unclear why he depicted Saint Francis so remarkably often – Zurbarán portrayed him at least 50 times.
