About the workThe Renaissance painter Cima came from Conegliano in northern Italy and later worked in Venice. Through symmetrical compositions, his paintings often convey a tranquility that invites contemplation. Here he shows Jesus and Mary flanked by two saints who lived in entirely different times but represent similar virtues: John the Baptist, a contemporary of Jesus Christ, is on the left, while Saint Francis, born some 1,200 years later, is on the right. Both renounced possessions as well as comforts and called on people to live a pious, modest life.
