About the workFrom the shore of the Bay of Naples, Andreas Achenbach captured Mount Somma and Mount Vesuvius – along with the smoke that characterises the volcano, which was very active in the nineteenth century. In this quickly executed study, for which Achenbach had only a few colours at his disposal, the artist was interested in the silhouette of the peaks. In the corners, the areas where the card had been affixed to a firm base remain bare. Best known for his Nordic landscapes, Achenbach painted this motif on an educational trip through Italy that lasted almost two years.
