About the workThe Düsseldorf artist Arthur Kampf, who was widely known in the 1890s, depicts the daughter of his friend and fellow artist Olof Jernberg in elegant clothing with a toy. Kampf realised several portraits of children, but his historical motifs were particularly popular. Art critics praised the individuality and verisimilitude of his subjects, which is also evident in this picture. Shortly before the turn of the century, Kampf moved to Berlin, where he continued to enjoy a high reputation. In 1933 he joined the Nazi Party; Adolf Hitler later ranked him as one of the five most significant German painters.
