on display, room 016 About the workThe Norwegian artist Ludvig Munthe came to Düsseldorf in 1861 with a scholarship from his home country to study painting and settled here permanently. He was famous for his winter landscapes, particularly his depictions of thawing scenes. This view of today’s Heinrich-Heine-Allee does not feature snow-covered streets, but rather conjures a cold and unpleasant atmosphere as sleet falls. Munthe was interested in the effects of modern artificial light sources. In the 1890s, there was a major expansion of gas lighting in Düsseldorf – some of which still exists today.
