About the workThe Saxon painter Fritz von Uhde, who lived near Munich for a long time, was praised for depicting children in a particularly naturalistic way. Here, as if in a snapshot, he portrays his three daughters Sophie, Anna and Amalie in a secluded area of their garden. In the dappled light, the youngest daughter, Sophie, gazes joyfully towards us. Her sisters, in keeping with the role of women at the time, are absorbed in needlework. As a single father, von Uhde painted numerous pictures of children. In these motifs he came to achieve a light, impressionistic style of painting.
