About the workThe Baltic-German painter Eduard von Gebhardt, who taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1874 to 1912, was an eminent representative of religious – in his case Protestant – art. Through his choice of historical costume, he relocated this scene from the New Testament of the Bible, in which Jesus resurrects Lazarus from the dead, to around 1500, roughly the time when the Protestant Church came into existence. Emotional depictions of biblical events became the artist’s trademark.
