About the work“I don’t paint from nature,” Christian Rohlfs had declared a year before painting this picture. A generation older than most Expressionists, he still shared their quest for simplified, powerful forms. In this image, Rohlfs combined broad and narrow brushstrokes to form a mountain. The landscape and sky can only be differentiated by their structure, not by their colour. What initially appears spontaneous is in fact carefully elaborated by means of fine outlines.
