About the workThe field occupies a large area of the painting; the harvesters bend low to the damp earth. Such depictions of poverty and hard toil, which neither tell a story nor specifically appeal to the viewer’s compassion, were rejected by contemporary art critics as “Schmutzmalerei” (“dirty painting”). At this point in time, Max Liebermann was not yet the celebrated Berlin “painter prince” that he later became. He lived in France and was inspired by many of his fellow artists there. He is said to have begun this picture in Barbizon, where landscape artists sought a new proximity to nature by working outdoors.
