About the work“Frau Magda Kröner is a keen artist, she attacks her subject as if it were a duel,” remarked the writer Else Franken in a magazine article in 1901. At the time, Kröner had already made a name for herself with exhibitions in London, Berlin and Munich. The centre of her life, however, was Düsseldorf, where the Holstein-born painter took lessons from Christian Kröner, whom she married in 1883. She became famous for her still lifes. In this work, she combined a naturalistic arrangement of fruit with an unusual angle of light.
