on display, room 016 About the workThe Saxon artist Max Klinger lived in Rome for several years and painted numerous portraits of women there. This sitter is assumed to be his first love, depicted from memory. The young woman appears self-engrossed and introverted. Klinger shows the lady against a neutral background and not against a landscape as in other portraits. He mostly portrayed women from his personal circle. In comparison to representative, commissioned portraits, these appear more approachable and individual. During his lifetime, Klinger was valued as a painter, sculptor and graphic artist.
