About the workThis “studio scene” is considered a rebellious programmatic example of Düsseldorf genre painting. The young artists depicted rejected the history painting that was dominant at the time, as numerous allusions indicate: pieces of armour are scattered carelessly on the floor; the large, now useless canvas serves as a room divider and palette. Genre painters preferred smaller formats and turned to “real” life instead of history and mythology. Johann Peter Hasenclever, a particularly humorous representative of his discipline, portrayed himself as the central figure running through the middle of the picture.
