About the workScenes of great realism with a moral undertone are the trademark of Haarlem painter Adriaen van Ostade. In a dark interior, peasants sit playing music and singing together. The technique of utilising bold contrasts between light and dark tones, which the artist adopted from his teacher Frans Hals, creates a seedy atmosphere. A similar theme is depicted in the painting “Taste”: both works were likely part of a series on the senses.
