About the workThe Alhambra is bathed in glistening light. Adolf Seel captured the southern Spanish fortress complex in such detail that it seems like a photograph. However, this is not a faithful reproduction of the building; various elements have been embellished or altered. Seel also added a group of Arab men. Built by Muslims in the fourteenth century, the Alhambra inspired many painters and writers in Seel’s era. Spain was not the only location visited by the artist, who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy: he also travelled to more distant destinations such as North Africa and Palestine.
