About the workJust before they kill the king’s sons, the murderers pause for a moment. They are spellbound by the sight of the innocent sleeping children. On canvas, the Düsseldorf painter Theodor Hildebrandt rendered this brief moment in the haunting sequence of events, which is taken from William Shakespeare’s drama “Richard III”. The realistic depiction and the tension of the image deeply moved viewers: it became one of the most famous works of the Düsseldorf School of Painting.
