About the workThis tankard satirically denounces human vices. Vanity and boastfulness are expressed through the clothing, while foolishness is indicated by the insects. There are many allusions to lust. The fool sets out to catch women with his lime-stick, while his female counterpart does the same for men. Only the daughter hesitates: “Mother, shall I do the same, must I pay heed to this foolishness?” She looks in the mirror, not out of narcissism, like her mother, but rather to understand herself. The depictions are modelled on prints from the period around 1588.
