About the workThe craftsmanship here is reminiscent of twelfth-century rock crystal work from the Middle East. The motif, however, was modelled on a Japanese ceramic lion owned by the glass artist Émile Gallé. His monogram on the vessel is also inspired by stamped signatures in Japanese script. The characters on the front are Chinese and can be translated as follows: “He who receives kindness but does not show genuine gratitude is not a real person.”
