About the workA few years after the introduction of black glass, the Count of Buquoy’s glassworks in South Bohemia succeeded in producing brick or sealing wax-red coloured glass in 1819. This achievement was particularly special because a similar kind of glass had been mentioned by the Roman naturalist Pliny as early as the first century AD. Since then, a number of glassworks had managed to make this opaque red glass, but they always had to rediscover the technique for themselves. The colour is created by elementary copper particles that are just large enough to scatter the light.
