About the workThe outline of the vase is typical of the period around 1950, when porcelain, ceramic and glass manufacturers took up the shape, which is reminiscent of the streamlined design of the 1930s in the USA. However, Bianconi’s design undermines the clear design principle with the irregular mosaic of coloured glass pieces. The vase thus comes across as an ironic commentary on the “good form” that dominated European design in the 1950s. The graphic designer and illustrator Fulvio Bianconi introduced a playful approach to the programme of the Venini glassworks, for which he had been working since 1946.
