About the workThe better glassmakers understand their craft, the more playful their work appears. The hot, viscous glass mass requires rapid work before it cools and hardens. The impression of playfulness is heightened when thread decorations are applied and freely shaped into plants and animals. The pattern embossed on the bodies of the birds on this bottle is mainly found on jars from the east of the Roman Empire. This type of decoration is otherwise also a typical feature of ancient glass production in Cologne.
