About the workThe deep blue of this bottle imitates lapis lazuli. The stone was already serving as a model for precious glass vessels some 2000 years earlier. In contrast to the beautiful colour, the design and decoration are rather crudely executed. Bottles of this type were common in Iran in the tenth and eleventh centuries, mostly blown from colourless glass, and reached as far as China via the eastern trade routes. The coarser workmanship indicates large-scale serial production towards the end of the period.
