About the workThis vessel is shaped like the lamps that were hung from ceilings in the Middle East, especially in mosques, in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The “inscription” on the rim of the mouth is illegible and merely imitates Arabic letters. In fact, the vase was made in Europe: the workshop producing it took advantage of the admiration for Middle Eastern crafts. At that time, Venice had become the world leader in glass art. The lamp is a unique testimony to this. It is very well preserved, except for the base, which has been replaced by a synthetic material.
