About the workThe depiction of Mary as Queen of Heaven is a reference to the biblical Book of Revelation: “And there appeared […] a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars upon her head.” The motif is part of a long-standing Middle Eastern tradition in which the Sumerian goddess Inanna and the Akkadian goddess Ishtar, for example, were worshipped as queens of heaven. The pane is an original from the northern nave of Cologne Cathedral. During restoration in the nineteenth century, damaged panes were replaced by copies.
