About the workThe collection of the Düsseldorf Art Academy includes over 100 drawings attributed to the Italian painter Andrea Sacchi. These are figure and drapery studies executed in black or red chalk, created as preparatory works for paintings from the period prior to 1652. Within the collection, Sacchi represents a specific position in the art-theoretical debates that took place at the Accademia di San Luca, the Roman art academy, in the first half of the 17th century. He was of the opinion that painting should not be overloaded, but rather should exhibit a clear visual language.
