About the workThis print depicts an ideal drawing academy. The basis of the artistic training is the study of anatomy, geometry and optics shown in the foreground, which is followed by the examination of ancient art. The view of the centrally placed sculpture of the god Apollo directs our gaze towards the Three Graces seated in a cloud. They embody the highest ideals of the artistic practice: if an artist does not strive for beauty in their work, then laborious study is futile. The print is based on a design by the Roman Baroque painter Carlo Maratti.
