About the workThe German architect and painter Adolf Schill is highly regarded for his watercolours of architectural spaces. He found inspiration for these on an educational trip to Italy, which he undertook from 1874 to 1876. In 1875, he stayed in Pompeii, where the sheets seen here were created. They show wall decorations of interiors. Five years later Schill became Professor of Decoration and Ornamentation at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He also taught many students the basics of style and architecture in his function as head of the department for that discipline. This knowledge was essential for monumental wall paintings. He also frequently advised fellow professors such as Peter Janssen on fresco designs.
