About the workRembrandt gazes at us melancholically. Or is he simply concentrating as he looks at himself in the mirror while creating this self-portrait? Very good drawing skills are required to capture the way the light falls here, with his head in shadow and shoulder area illuminated. While the crosshatching around the eyes, in his hair and on his cap is almost condensed into a flat black, his back and the scarf around his neck are precisely rendered with only a few lines. Rembrandt often used his own face to study different facial expressions.
