About the workIt almost seems as if Mary herself is dazzled by the radiance of her child. With this piece, the Dutch artist Rembrandt created an unusual depiction of the Mother of God that goes back to the pictorial tradition of the Madonna in a halo. Usually, the sun-like Mary is shown standing on a crescent moon surrounded by stars. Rembrandt detaches the motif from this symbolism and allows Mary to shine through between the lines forming clouds and the empty surface in the upper part of the picture.
